FFXIV Evercold Set to Revamp Outdated MMO Features

The core mechanics of Final Fantasy 14 have remained consistent over the years, but with Evercold, Square Enix is set to introduce some exciting changes to the story and combat. Producer Naoki Yoshida shared insights into these updates during his keynote at the Berlin Fan Fest, highlighting the introduction of branching narrative paths in Evercold’s main quests.

Yoshida’s take on “branching narrative” aligns more with the character relationship dynamics seen in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth rather than traditional choice-driven storylines. Players will begin with the same initial quest, but after completing it, they can choose from multiple subsequent quests in any order they prefer. Once all quests are completed, the story will converge again, ensuring everyone experiences the same overarching narrative while allowing for unique individual journeys.

In a shift from previous design choices, Square Enix is also considering a feature that allows players to teleport directly to quest-givers. Historically, players had to teleport to the nearest fast-travel point and then make their way to the quest location. Yoshida acknowledged that this time-saving feature has gained popularity in modern gaming, and the team aims to incorporate it into Evercold to make the game more accommodating to players’ schedules. However, he noted that this feature is still in development and may not be fully ready by launch.

As players tackle dungeons and field activities in these more flexible quests, they may approach them at different levels. To address this, Square Enix is implementing a new auto-balancing system that adjusts enemy levels and dungeon difficulty in real-time based on individual player levels. This system will replace the current method of syncing player levels and limiting access to certain skills. While these changes will be specific to Evercold’s main scenario, Yoshida mentioned plans for future expansions.

Regarding dungeons, Yoshida revealed that Evercold’s duty support updates will enhance how players can engage with these challenges. Starting with patch 8.1, players will be able to bring their chocobo companions into dungeons to fight alongside them. Previously, a light party consisted of four characters, but now players can have two human or human-like characters and two chocobos, with the ability to customize their chocobo’s combat role. However, these updates will not apply to dungeons from earlier expansions right away.

Yoshida also provided more details on the new armory system’s item level upgrades. The upcoming changes will allow players to copy the highest item level gear from one job to another, streamlining the process of assembling a job set. However, copying item levels will not alter a gear piece’s parameters influenced by materia, meaning players will still need to seek out the best-in-slot items for optimal performance.

Finally, Yoshida unveiled new character action skins, which replace existing animations for various actions—such as emotes and job abilities—with more dynamic and visually striking alternatives. He showcased two new teleportation skins: one envelops the player in light while performing a dramatic pirouette, and the other features dark energy as the player is consumed by a void. Given that some animations have remained unchanged for over a decade, this update is significant. Customizable job action animations will be gradually introduced starting in patch 8.1, with more actions to follow in subsequent updates, though specific details on which jobs will be included were not disclosed.

Final Fantasy 14 Evercold is set to launch in January for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
