Warner Bros. Takes Legal Action Against Amazon Over Employee Poaching

Warner Bros. Discovery has launched a lawsuit against Amazon, claiming the company has unlawfully recruited employees, including Pia Barlow, who previously served as senior VP for originals marketing. The complaint states that Amazon is “riding on the coattails of other well-established Hollywood mainstays” and describes its actions as a “lawless employee shopping spree.” Reports indicate that Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama series and films, is also among those targeted by Amazon.

Barlow is scheduled to start her new role as Amazon’s head of original series marketing on August 3rd. Warner’s lawsuit asserts that Barlow was under contract until October 31st, 2027, and accuses Amazon of intentionally “inducing” her to violate her contract by offering a more lucrative compensation package and legal assistance in the event Warner pursued legal action for breach of contract. The suit further claims that these recruitment efforts are still in progress.

While term employment agreements are standard in the entertainment sector, they are less common in other industries, leading to tensions with tech companies trying to enter the space. For instance, YouTube reached a settlement with Disney over the hiring of veteran executive Justin Connolly, and 20th Century Fox successfully sued Netflix for poaching two of its executives.
