Ubisoft Abandons Far Cry Extraction Shooter for New Ambitious Open-World FPS

Vantage Studios, the team behind popular Ubisoft franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry, is reportedly developing a new open-world first-person shooter in the Far Cry series. This comes after the cancellation of a different project, an unannounced extraction shooter.

According to a recent report, a project codenamed Maverick (the extraction shooter) has been put on hold and may be reworked into a new open-world shooter called Kodiak. This is being developed alongside another Far Cry title, codenamed Blackbird, which is expected to be the next main installment in the long-running series.

The report indicates that Far Cry Kodiak has recently moved past its initial concept phase and is now in active development at Vantage Studios.

Details about Far Cry Kodiak remain scarce, but it is likely to incorporate some of the unused concepts from Maverick, with a release date still several years away. Given Far Cry’s reputation for blending FPS and action-adventure gameplay, this approach may resonate better with fans compared to the extraction shooter concept.

The last entry in the series, Far Cry 6, received mixed reviews upon its release in 2021, and Ubisoft has not made any official announcements regarding a new Far Cry game since then. Notably, longtime producer Dan Hay departed the company in 2021 after the launch of Far Cry 6.

In the meantime, fans can also anticipate a Far Cry TV series on Hulu, produced by Noah Hawley. This anthology-style show will feature different settings and characters each season, mirroring the diverse experiences found in the games. The series will star co-creator Rob Mac, Steve Buscemi, and Lizzy Caplan, and will be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney Plus internationally.
