Children of Blood and Bone Trailer Transforms Avatar: The Last Airbender Fantasy into Reality
For almost twenty years, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have envisioned a storyline where Zuko and Katara find romance. The newly released trailer for Children of Blood and Bone seems poised to bring that Zutara dream to life.
This adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s acclaimed novel introduces its own magical society facing persecution, featuring a martial arts-trained hero wielding a staff and magic, a tyrant intent on eradicating all magic, and—most crucially—a conflicted crown prince seeking his father’s approval while secretly wanting to do the right thing. Prince Inan (Damson Idris) mirrors Zuko closely, tasked by his father, King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor), with hunting down the magical chosen one. Instead of a bald boy, his target is a white-haired girl named Zélie (Thuso Mbedu), who feels like a blend of Aang and Katara.
Set in Orïsha, a kingdom inspired by West African culture, Children of Blood and Bone explores a world where magic once thrived among the maji but was violently suppressed by King Saran, who captured and likely killed Zélie’s mother. Early in the trailer, Saran refers to magic as a “festering disease” to Inan, who contemplates the kind of king he wishes to become when he takes the throne. The action-packed trailer showcases Zélie training under Mama Agba (Viola Davis) in a coastal village before she reawakens her magical abilities.
The most exciting moment for Avatar fans comes around two minutes into the trailer, featuring a romantic scene in a moonlit, water-filled cavern where Inan tenderly caresses Zélie’s face and says, “You have unraveled me.” This is followed by an epic sequence of them fighting together, with Zélie using wind magic to take down their foes.
This time, it seems the Zuko-like character might actually fall for the magical hero he was meant to stop, rather than just becoming friends.
Adeyemi has previously described Children of Blood and Bone as an African counterpart to The Last Airbender. While there are many similarities, it’s far from a simple retelling. There are significant differences: Zélie is a young woman and not the last of her kind, magic isn’t confined by cultural boundaries, and it has been dormant for years. Although Zélie frequently uses air magic, the magic systems in Children of Blood and Bone feel more expansive and open-ended.
The story’s mythology draws from Yoruba culture, and the trailer presents a grand fantasy spectacle, complete with intricate costumes, mythical creatures, large-scale battles, and a diverse cast that includes Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch.
Children of Blood and Bone hits theaters and IMAX on January 15, 2027. For Avatar fans who have long wished for a romantic connection between Katara and Zuko, this trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse of what could have been.
I loved every second of Legend of Korra, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this just as much!
