OpenAI is developing a range of devices for its AI chatbots.
In a recent chat with Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, OpenAI president Greg Brockman revealed that the company is developing a “family of devices” designed for interacting with its AI models. However, he didn’t confirm speculation about a smart speaker set to launch in 2027 or earlier hints that it could be a wearable device like the Humane AI pin. He simply mentioned that “you can expect them soon” without providing a specific release date.
When asked if Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI might affect the devices being created in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, Brockman stated, “We are focused on our own development and technology.” He emphasized, “We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We are plenty innovative. We are thinking about things from our own angle.”
Brockman believes that the future will see a shift towards voice interaction with computers instead of typing for most tasks. Addressing the potential chaos of everyone speaking to their devices in open office spaces, he mentioned the emergence of soundproof “beak” masks. While he doesn’t personally use one, he noted that it highlights a clear product market fit, even if many agree it’s not an ideal solution.
Additionally, Brockman discussed OpenAI’s efforts to tackle trust issues surrounding its AI models, particularly regarding the privacy of ChatGPT’s “temporary chat” mode. He mentioned that the company is working on technological solutions to provide “verifiable, auditable guarantees” ensuring that only the AI can access users’ private data.
