Halo: Campaign Evolved players report lower gun accuracy on PS5 compared to Xbox.

They say war never changes, and that rings especially true in the ongoing console battle, which has taken an interesting turn with the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved. For the first time in its 25-year legacy, a Halo title is officially available on PlayStation alongside its PC and Xbox versions. However, some players have reported noticeable differences across these platforms.

Launched on July 28 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a complete remake of Bungie’s 2001 classic, Halo: Combat Evolved. This remake faithfully recreates the original experience, now enhanced with graphics that meet 2026 standards, while retaining iconic elements like the assault rifle.

The community’s latest debate centers around this weapon. In Combat Evolved, Master Chief wielded the MA5B assault rifle, which had a 60-round magazine. In contrast, Campaign Evolved features the 32-round MA5C as the base assault rifle. (Note: Players can unlock the Magnified skull modifier to revert to the classic MA5B.) Some gamers have claimed that the MA5C is less accurate on PS5, although it does fire at a slightly quicker rate.

The conversation was sparked by a Reddit user named Mikalton, who posted a video showcasing a rather mundane yet telling activity in a Halo game: shooting at a wall while standing still. The left side of the video displays a player firing the weapon, with the recoil causing the reticle to drift from the center. The right side shows a PS5 player doing the same, but the reticle drifts more significantly. Additional footage reveals similar patterns of bullet hole spreads from players on PS5 compared to those on PC or Xbox, though it’s not always clear which platform each player is using.

Speculation has run rampant regarding the cause of these discrepancies, with some suggesting it could be related to frame rates or other technical factors. (A few noted that the Magnified skull also impacts weapon accuracy.) However, many players seem to agree that the Xbox version of the assault rifle feels superior.

“Honestly, the PS5 version looks like a standard AR, but the Xbox/PC version is like a laser beam,” one player commented. “I usually don’t use the AR in any Halo, but in Campaign Evolved, I find myself only dropping it when it runs out of ammo because of how accurate it feels.”

Interestingly, Halo: Campaign Evolved is also the first title in the series to launch without a competitive multiplayer mode. This absence could stem from various factors. As the first Halo game built on Unreal Engine 5, while it captures the essence of a Halo campaign, the developers might still be fine-tuning aspects for competitive play. They could also face challenges in developing multiplayer for a platform they haven’t worked on before. Plus, considering how far Halo multiplayer has evolved since its early days, would players transitioning from the outstanding Halo Infinite even want to revisit the past?

Despite requests for comment, Halo Studios has not provided any insights.

Mikalton’s video has led some to speculate that the slight accuracy differences between platforms might explain the absence of a competitive mode. However, this argument is somewhat irrelevant because, let’s face it, if you’re relying on the assault rifle in PvP, you’ve already put yourself at a disadvantage.

Get tactical, marines.
