Pokémon Red and Blue Get Transformed into Stunning 3D Dioramas with New Mod
There have been numerous fan-made concepts showcasing what an HD remake of the classic Pokémon games could look like, but a new mod for Pokémon Red and Blue has brought this vision to life, making it a fantastic way to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary.
This mod is part of the Pokémon Gen 1 Recompilation Project, which aims to recreate the original Game Boy titles while introducing various enhancements. Players can swap character sprites from other games, adjust filters and graphics settings, and now utilize a Voxel mod that transforms the game’s environment into a 3D diorama-like experience.
The creator, bryanthaboi, acknowledges that the project isn’t flawless. There are some quirky visual glitches and certain sprites may lack color. He invites players to join the community on Discord for further playtesting. Despite these issues, Pokémon Red and Blue look impressive with this fresh perspective and updated shading. Battles have also been revamped, occurring in the overworld similar to how they do in newer titles like Scarlet and Violet, rather than in the empty void of the original Game Boy version.
While Pokémon Red and Blue may feel a bit outdated by today’s standards, those seeking the “definitive” versions can check out the FireRed and LeafGreen ports on Switch. However, the original games still possess a unique charm that many modern Pokémon titles lack. If you’re eager to experience them in a new way, this mod is definitely worth a look.
