After nine years, a cherished cult classic adventure game inspired by The X-Files is set to receive a sequel.

It’s been almost ten years since the beloved point-and-click mystery, Thimbleweed Park, captured the hearts of gamers. Although a small spinoff was released in 2020 to tie up some loose ends, it seemed like the adventure was over. So, it was quite the surprise when creator Ron Gilbert announced that a sequel is on the way.

Gilbert shared the exciting news on his personal blog, revealing that production for Thimbleweed Park 2 has officially kicked off. Like its predecessor, this sequel will be self-published. He also mentioned that several developers from the original team are returning, including Mark Ferrari, David Fox, Octavi Navarro, Robert Megone, and co-creator Gary Winnick. Fans can expect the game to launch in early 2028 for Linux, macOS, and Windows PC. Gilbert plans to start a dedicated development blog for Thimbleweed Park 2 soon.

The original Thimbleweed Park was a key player in the point-and-click revival of the 2010s, joining the ranks of titles like Kentucky Route Zero and Broken Age. Its narrative, heavily inspired by and parodying shows like Twin Peaks and The X-Files, followed two FBI agents as they delved into a murder mystery in the quirky town. Players encountered a cast of bizarre characters throughout their investigation.

Gilbert and Winnick are renowned for their contributions to classic point-and-click adventures at LucasArts, where they worked on iconic titles such as the Monkey Island series and Maniac Mansion. The latter was a significant influence on Thimbleweed Park. While many games in the genre’s revival aimed to innovate the point-and-click formula, Thimbleweed Park remained true to the classic style of the 1980s and 1990s.

With the resurgence of interest in X-Files-inspired narratives, Gilbert and the development team have chosen an opportune moment to revisit the world of Thimbleweed Park. The series is currently experiencing a revival, with a reboot in the works from Ryan Coogler.
