Assassin’s Creed Sees Surge in Player Numbers Following The Odyssey Release
If you found yourself inspired to dive into a video game set in Ancient Greece after watching Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic, you’re definitely not alone.
There are plenty of games that draw from Greek mythology, but Ubisoft’s 2018 RPG, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, stands out as a strong contender. The game meticulously recreates significant regions of Greece and features many iconic locations from Homer’s epic. Players can explore Odysseus’ palace early on or battle legendary creatures like the Cyclops. The 2019 DLC, Lost Tales From Greece, enhances this experience by introducing even more famous monsters from the original tale, along with a mission that humorously references key moments from the poem.
Given this context, it’s no surprise that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has seen a notable spike in interest since the film adaptation hit theaters.
Analyst Rhys Elliot highlighted on X that active players of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey surged by 90% in July 2026 across all major platforms. Xbox, which includes the game in its Game Pass lineup, experienced the most significant increase in players. Current estimates suggest around 233,000 active users, which is impressive for a title that hasn’t had a major update in five years.
Several factors likely contributed to this resurgence beyond the film’s success.
Elliot noted that Ubisoft has effectively generated buzz for the game this year. Casual gamers can explore ACO’s educational mode, which offers a combat-free, museum-like experience complete with guided tours. While much of the marketing has centered on the recently launched Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft’s social media has also occasionally spotlighted Assassin’s Creed Odyssey throughout July.
This renewed interest has sparked speculation about a potential remake of the game. While some might question the need to re-release a relatively recent title that’s still readily available on modern platforms, a true port of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is not currently on Nintendo systems. The combination of Nolan’s box office success, the ongoing popularity of the Switch 2, and the positive reception of the Black Flag remake could encourage Ubisoft to take another chance on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
While games inspired by Greek mythology aren’t as prevalent as one might expect, there are definitely some standout titles worth exploring.
