Sony Stays Committed to Digital Transition Despite Fan Backlash: “We’re Proceeding with Caution”

It’s been nearly a month since the announcement that PlayStation will phase out physical discs for new games starting in 2028, and a significant number of frustrated fans have voiced their discontent over the shift to an all-digital model. During a recent earnings call, Sony addressed the ongoing criticism, acknowledging the strong emotions surrounding physical games while reaffirming their commitment to this transition.

“There are various reasons behind this decision, with the primary one being the overall trend toward digital content,” said Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao, speaking through an interpreter during a Q&A session. “This shift isn’t limited to PlayStation; it’s a broader movement across all types of content.”

Tao elaborated on the thought process behind the decision:

“When we consider the future, we’ve invested significant time and effort into this decision, and we’re moving forward with caution. We recognize that there are diverse opinions, and we understand the community’s strong feelings. Games hold a special place in many hearts, often tied to cherished memories. We want to take those emotions into account. As we develop the future digital ecosystem, we’re eager to explore how we can engage with gamers.”

In response to the backlash regarding the discontinuation of PlayStation discs, Tao emphasized the careful consideration that went into the decision.

Some players are organizing a boycott of PlayStation, planning a week-long blackout in mid-August. “Whether it’s shutting down beloved studios like Bluepoint, pursuing a questionable live-service model, canceling fan events, neglecting PS VR2, or being out of touch with the franchises fans want to see return, PlayStation has never felt more disconnected from its community,” stated a physical gaming advocate on social media. “Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the final straw.”

An investment analyst during the briefing questioned Tao about how the end of discs might affect Sony’s relationships with retailers and how they plan to distinguish the PS5 and future consoles from gaming PCs if both are entirely digital. Tao responded by noting that publishers could still send empty boxes with download codes to stores in regions like North America and argued that PlayStation hardware will remain competitive in terms of affordability.

“Regarding retailers, we consider regional characteristics and engage in thorough discussions with each partner to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes,” the CFO explained. “We don’t believe that the absence of discs will be a key differentiator between PlayStation and PCs. There’s a unique way to experience gaming on a PC, and while it has its advantages, our curated content and stable gaming environment are significant strengths. Compared to high-end gaming PCs, our products are more affordable. Therefore, we don’t see the disc as a crucial factor for differentiation. Moving forward, we can coexist harmoniously with PC gaming.”
