D&D Ventures into a Distant Galaxy

Dungeons & Dragons is gearing up to trade its classic swords and sorcery for lightsabers and the Force in 2027. This exciting crossover with Star Wars was revealed during the D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con 2026, leaving fans buzzing about what other franchises might join the fantasy RPG.

The announcement follows the controversial yet profitable Universes Beyond strategy from Magic: The Gathering, prompting speculation about which properties could be integrated into D&D. The first crossover with World of Warcraft seems like a perfect match, given the MMORPG’s aesthetic and lore. However, the surprise appearance of Darth Vader at the end of the panel confirmed that the 2027 Season of Rebellion will indeed feature Star Wars.

This isn’t D&D’s first venture into sci-fi or science fantasy. Longtime fans will recall Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, the 1980 adventure module by Gary Gygax that allowed players to explore a crashed spaceship filled with robots, aliens, and laser weaponry. The Spelljammer setting, introduced in 1989, was D&D’s major attempt to incorporate space adventures into its canon. Additionally, Star Wars has previously appeared in a product from Wizards of the Coast, which published the Star Wars Roleplaying Game in the early 2000s before letting the license lapse in 2010.

While specific details about the Star Wars crossover in D&D have yet to be unveiled, we can expect that players and Dungeon Masters will receive everything they need to craft stories within George Lucas’s universe. It will be intriguing to see how the designers adapt the Force to fit the mechanics of D&D 5.5e, possibly reworking the psionics rules that are set to make a comeback in the Dark Sun campaign setting.

Another interesting possibility is that a Star Wars setting for Magic: The Gathering could be on the horizon. Both Magic and D&D are published by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro, and the RPG is adopting the successful Universes Beyond strategy from the trading card game. Given that Hasbro/Wizards secured a deal for Star Wars in D&D, it raises the question of whether Magic might also benefit from this collaboration. However, with Star Wars currently promoting its own trading card game, Star Wars Unlimited, it’s possible that the agreement with Hasbro and Wizards is exclusive to D&D.

Nonetheless, a few months back, Magic players reported misprinted cards featuring an X-Wing set symbol. So, there’s still a glimmer of hope for an epic Commander showdown between Trekkies and Star Wars enthusiasts.
