Popular Science YouTuber Acknowledges Struggles with AI Following Controversial Video Reaction

Longtime YouTuber and science content creator Hank Green has announced that he may be “pausing” his main channel as he reflects on his increasing reliance on ChatGPT and other AI tools. This comes after some fans suggested that a recent video featured him reading AI-generated text.

On July 29, a new episode of Ask Hank Anything was uploaded to the YouTube channel Complexly, a well-known science education channel established in 2017, which is part of a broader network of educational content created by Hank and his brother John Green nearly 15 years ago. In this episode, TikToker SoupyTime posed questions to Hank, who responded in his usual entertaining yet informative style. However, one particular moment gained traction online, where Green, in a later segment, stated, “I appreciate the pushback” while addressing a disagreement from earlier in the episode. Some viewers interpreted this as him reading a response typical of what you might get from ChatGPT when generating content.

As the clip circulated and accusations of AI-generated scripts emerged, Green tweeted to clarify that the line in question was not written by AI or himself; it was an impromptu remark made during filming. However, he acknowledged that he does use ChatGPT for research and conceded that his script had a tone reminiscent of AI-generated content.

“I think it’s fair to say I was relying too much on [AI] generated notes,” Green tweeted. “That’s something I’ve been doing, and it’s a bad habit at a time when I’ve overcommitted myself.”

Although he later deleted the tweet, he shared a link to a Reddit post that included an image of it. In the comments of that post, Green offered a detailed apology to fans he felt he had disappointed, explaining that he is likely going to take a break from his main channel and reduce his content creation. He also recognized that his relationship with generative AI tools like ChatGPT has become unhealthy.

“I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs—by doing more and more—is not healthy for me or beneficial for the world,” Green stated. “It is careless and has disconnected me from where people are on this. I discussed this with [my wife] last night, and she was very straightforward. Frankly, so was [my brother]. Neither of them thinks I’ve been healthy. I need to readjust.”

While some criticized his apology and pointed to his dependency on AI as a troubling sign of how technology can affect even the brightest minds, many fans expressed appreciation for Hank’s willingness to listen and adapt.

“I also agree with everyone here that we do not want to see your personality fade from the forefront of your content,” remarked another fan in a reply that Green described as “kind-hearted.”
