God of War TV Series Announces Surprising New Casting Change

Prime Video’s adaptation of God of War is facing more changes in its second season, with reports indicating that new actors are being sought for the roles of Atreus and Thrud.

In the first season, Ryan Hurst was initially cast as Kratos, while Callum Vinson took on the role of Atreus, and Island Austin was set to portray Thrud. However, due to an injury sustained by Hurst during filming, he will be replaced. Recent casting calls suggest that Atreus and Thrud will also be recast for the upcoming season.

The casting calls from May indicate that the studio is now looking for actors aged 14 to 17, a shift from the previous age range of 9 to 12. This change aligns with the narrative progression, as the second season will adapt the events of 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok, which features a time jump and more action-oriented roles for Atreus and Thrud. The creative team appears to prefer older actors to better fit the characters’ development rather than waiting for the originally cast actors to grow into their roles.

With Ryan Hurst’s departure, the decision to recast other key characters raises questions about the overall cohesion and consistency of the adaptation. Fans are left wondering how production challenges might impact the show’s quality, especially since it would have been interesting to see Callum Vinson evolve into the role of Atreus, similar to Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie in The Last of Us.

Currently, it seems there won’t be any additional major recasts for either season. The premiere date for the first episode remains unannounced, as filming will need to resume with a new actor stepping in as Kratos. Meanwhile, the next video game installment in the series, God of War: Laufey, is set to launch for PS5 on February 16, 2027.
