Wonder Man’s showrunner expresses surprise at the series’ cancellation.

Andrew Guest, the showrunner of the Disney Plus series Wonder Man, recently shared a video confirming the show’s cancellation. He specifically pointed to Marvel Studios and Disney’s current MCU strategy as the reasons behind this decision, rather than any issues with the creative team involved in Wonder Man.

Earlier this year, Marvel had announced a second season for Wonder Man, but reports on July 28 revealed that the show had been axed. This led to speculation about potential production or scheduling conflicts, particularly concerning director Destin Daniel Cretton. In a TikTok video over the weekend, Guest clarified the situation.

“This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue,” Guest stated. “Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben, and I all loved making this show, felt passionately about continuing it, and were eager to do so. Contracts were signed. Schedules were cleared. The writers’ room was supposed to start this week. Production was set to begin early next year, but an internal decision was made between Disney and Marvel that this no longer made sense for them, even though it did a few months ago.”

As for the storyline of Wonder Man’s second season, details remain under wraps. Guest mentioned that he had drafted the first episode and outlined potential character arcs for the season. Now, he is simply hoping that Emmy voters will recognize Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for his outstanding performance in the first season.

These revelations make the cancellation of Wonder Man feel even more abrupt, as it seems to have caught the cast and crew off guard, who were excited to continue their work. Disney has yet to respond to Guest’s comments or provide any public statement regarding the cancellation.

Currently, the only live-action MCU series confirmed for Disney Plus are VisionQuest, debuting this October, and the third season of Daredevil: Born Again. The MCU appears to be shifting its primary focus back to films, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day raking in $355 million during its opening weekend.

Marvel has also uploaded the first episode of the series to YouTube.
