Baldur’s Gate 3 Introduces Cross-Play with Xbox Play Anywhere Feature
Three years post-launch, Baldur’s Gate 3 has received a significant platform upgrade. This acclaimed RPG from Larian Studios now features Xbox Play Anywhere, enabling players who own the game digitally on Xbox to also enjoy it on PC and handheld devices via the Xbox app at no extra charge.
This long-awaited feature for Xbox enthusiasts was hinted at last fall when an Xbox Store listing inadvertently revealed Xbox Play Anywhere support before an official announcement was made. The timing is perfect for newcomers to Faerûn, especially with the game celebrating its third anniversary and currently available at a 30% discount across various platforms.
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s cross-buy initiative that allows players to purchase a supported game once through the Xbox Store and access it on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. This feature also ensures that cloud saves, game progress, and Xbox achievements are seamlessly transferred between devices.
For those playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on a compatible handheld like the ROG Ally X, if you encounter a challenging battle that you’d prefer to tackle on a desktop for better control, you can switch devices effortlessly without losing any progress.
While Microsoft has been gradually expanding the Play Anywhere library, support remains inconsistent among third-party publishers. The program includes notable titles like The Outer Worlds 2, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but last month’s additions were less exciting, with PGA Tour 2K25 and Buckshot Roulette being the most noteworthy. This makes Baldur’s Gate 3 one of the standout titles added to the program.
This update coincides with a busy period for the RPG, as new third-party narratives continue to emerge. Although Larian has wrapped up development on Baldur’s Gate 3 and is moving on to its next project, Divinity, the game’s universe is still expanding.
Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast announced Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, a prequel novel by bestselling fantasy author T. Kingfisher that delves into the vampire spawn’s backstory prior to the game’s events.
Additionally, Dark Horse has revealed an upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 comic series, although Larian has clarified that it is not involved in this project. While details about the comic are limited, it signals Wizards of the Coast’s commitment to further developing one of gaming’s most beloved RPGs beyond its initial release.
The franchise is also making its way to television. Earlier this year, HBO announced a Baldur’s Gate series from Chernobyl and The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin, which will continue the narrative after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. Since the announcement, however, HBO and Hasbro have provided little additional information, leaving fans eager for updates on casting, production, or a release date.
T. Kingfisher’s upcoming story about Astarion’s early years is part of a new collaboration with Random House Worlds.
