Valkyrae Discusses Impact of Spider-Man Spoiler: “I Felt Bad for True Fans”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day kicked off with a bang at the box office, but just days before fans could catch Tom Holland’s latest adventure, R&B artist Steve Lacy dropped a major spoiler that Marvel had been keeping under wraps. During an interview with popular Twitch streamer Valkyrae at the movie’s premiere, Lacy casually mentioned a character whose identity had been a closely guarded secret. Valkyrae’s discomfort was palpable as Lacy not only revealed the character’s name but also spoiled their role in the film, leaving her feeling for the fans who had managed to stay unspoiled until that moment.
Lacy disclosed that Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, plays Jean Grey, one of the most formidable X-Men. Marvel had kept this information tightly controlled, even placing Sink on the press tour with strict instructions not to discuss her character. While fans had speculated for months about her role, there was no official confirmation in the trailers or promotional material. So when Valkyrae asked Lacy about his favorite character and requested he avoid spoilers, she was taken aback when he not only confirmed Jean’s involvement but also revealed that she serves as the film’s main antagonist.
In a reflection on that live moment, Valkyrae shared her thoughts on the situation and how she attempted to give Lacy a chance to backtrack, which he didn’t take.
Valkyrae recounted her reaction to Lacy’s spoiler, saying, “The second I heard a very specific word, I… dude, my face is so funny. My reaction was insane. I couldn’t even hide it because I knew that it was not just a theory, but it was a straight-up spoiler. […] I was trying to maybe give him an out, because I knew it was a theory, so I was like ‘Oh, is that a spoiler?’ I thought he was going to say something to play it off, and then bro doubles down on another spoiler.”
After wrapping up the interview, Valkyrae felt a wave of sympathy for the fans eagerly awaiting the movie’s release. “I felt so bad because obviously it goes gigaviral, and it sucks for the Spider-Man fans, like the people who are waiting to watch the movie getting what is likely to be a spoiler. You never really know if it’s a spoiler until you watch, so I felt really bad for the real Spider-Man fans. Some people were really, really upset, and I think that’s valid. No one likes spoilers or even the possibility of one.”
Lacy’s song “oh yeah?” is featured in Brand New Day, suggesting he had seen the film beforehand or had insider knowledge. It was a tough moment for Valkyrae, who tried her best to prevent the spoiler from slipping out, but unfortunately, it didn’t pan out. On a brighter note, Sink delivers a solid performance in the movie, and hopefully, fans will soon get to see high-quality clips of her scenes online.
