Samsung’s HDR10 Plus Advanced Debuts on Prime Video This Month
After showcasing HDR10 Plus Advanced late last year, Samsung is set to roll out its not-Dolby Vision 2 specification globally on Amazon’s Prime Video this month. The first TVs to support this feature will be part of Samsung’s 2026 lineup, which will leverage the additional metadata to provide more accurate HDR tailored to the content being viewed. This includes advanced tone mapping that can adjust specific areas of the screen rather than applying a uniform setting across the entire frame.
While Samsung’s announcement didn’t specify which titles will initially support this feature or how many there will be, it did include a promotional image highlighting Amazon’s series Ride or Die. This news follows a recent incident where Disney Plus in Europe temporarily lost Dolby Vision support due to a patent dispute.
HDR10 Plus Advanced shares similar capabilities with Dolby Vision 2 but avoids the licensing fees associated with Dolby’s certification. It also introduces “Intelligent Motion Smoothing,” which can adjust settings on a scene-by-scene basis. Brands like Hisense, Philips, and TCL have confirmed that their upcoming TVs will support Dolby Vision 2, with content providers like Peacock and Canal+ also on board, although the feature isn’t available yet and will likely require a software update for compatible TVs when it launches.
Both HDR formats aim to enhance motion smoothing for fast-paced content like sports while steering clear of the jarring “soap opera” effect that can detract from films and TV shows. However, we’ll need to see these technologies in action to evaluate their effectiveness. The HDR10 Plus Advanced FAQ provides further insights into how its metadata tags can cater to various genres (such as Movie, Sports, Animation, News, or General) and specific elements like lighting, motion, or perspective to optimize how your TV processes the content.
