Danganronpa 2×2’s Delay Linked to Grand Theft Auto 6, but Not in the Way You Might Expect

As we gear up for the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 this November, the gaming landscape is shifting, with many titles opting to steer clear of the release window. One such title is Danganronpa 2×2, and its developers openly acknowledge that the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6 influenced their decision to delay.

In a recent interview, series creator and writer Kazuta Kodaka explained the reasoning behind the postponement. “There’s a certain AAA/AAAA title that is gonna be released soon,” he noted, “so we wanted to avoid that a little bit.” This sentiment resonates across the industry, as numerous developers and publishers are making similar choices. Kodaka also mentioned that this delay has granted the team extra time for development, which is always a positive.

However, Kodaka’s motivations aren’t purely selfless. He humorously added, “I wouldn’t have time to make the game while playing Grand Theft Auto 6, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time.” It’s a sentiment many can relate to, as Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited game releases in history. Developers, like players, are just as excited to dive into Rockstar’s expansive world and see if it meets the immense expectations. With the release date set for November 19, there’s still a bit of a wait ahead.

Danganronpa 2×2 is a remake of the 2012 classic Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the second installment in the beloved murder mystery visual novel series. This remake aims to revitalize the original experience with enhanced graphics, quality-of-life improvements, and a complete transformation of the game map from 2D to 3D. Notably, it will introduce a new story route called Slayhem Mode, which promises a fresh narrative experience. Producer Shohei Sakakibara has indicated that Slayhem Mode will offer around 35 hours of gameplay, slightly more than the original’s 30 hours.

Danganronpa 2×2 is slated for release in early 2027 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
