Disney Plus to Feature TikTok Content in Place of Wonder Man Season 2
As streaming platforms look for ways to stand out against social media, Disney has unveiled a new partnership with TikTok that will introduce user-generated content to Disney Plus. This initiative, dubbed the “Verts” feature on the mobile app, will showcase select Disney-themed TikToks from participating creators, featuring characters and narratives from Disney’s extensive lineup, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, FX, and more.
Through this collaboration, TikTok will gain access to assets from Disney films and series, while Disney Plus will host a feed of related TikTok videos. The announcement highlights the goal of fostering deeper engagement among subscribers, enhancing fan conversations, building stronger communities, and encouraging exploration of diverse storytelling formats on Disney Plus.
“The best storytellers are fans first,” stated a Disney executive. “This has always been true at Disney, and today, fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways. This partnership creates a bridge between our narratives and the creativity they inspire, giving creators a larger platform to showcase their work and offering audiences more to discover on Disney Plus daily.”
In an effort to encourage participation, TikTok creators will be invited to join the Disney Creator Ambassador Program, which offers special rewards, increased visibility, access to exclusive events, and career development opportunities. Disney pointed to internal TikTok data indicating that fans shared an average of 6.5 million film- and TV-related posts daily last year, with nearly half of surveyed viewers reporting they watched a movie or show after discovering it on TikTok.
While Disney sees this partnership as a way to reward creators and promote its content, the timing of the announcement raises eyebrows. Recently, the streamer made headlines by canceling the well-received Emmy-nominated series Wonder Man, despite having previously approved a second season. The showrunner clarified that scheduling issues were not the cause of the cancellation; rather, it stemmed from Disney’s and Marvel Studios’ evolving plans for the MCU.
Despite the excitement surrounding the TikTok deal, concerns linger about the platform, particularly regarding user data security linked to its parent company, ByteDance. Following threats of a TikTok ban, a deal was struck during the previous administration to allow the app to continue operating in the U.S. Since then, users have reported instances of censorship when posting content critical of political figures.
This new TikTok partnership appears to replace Disney’s earlier plans for a collaboration with an AI video-generation tool that was ultimately scrapped due to cost issues. Nonetheless, the emphasis on user-generated content has sparked worries about potential declines in quality on Disney Plus.
