Google Unveils Significant Changes in AI Leadership Team
Google is undergoing some major changes in its AI leadership, particularly with Demis Hassabis, the head of Google DeepMind. Announced by CEO Sundar Pichai, Hassabis will take on the roles of chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. He will also continue to lead Alphabet’s Isomorphic Labs, which focuses on leveraging AI for drug development. Koray Kavukcuoglu, who previously served as DeepMind’s CTO, is stepping up as Google’s SVP of DeepMind and will report directly to Pichai. He will also retain his position as Google’s chief AI architect.
Hassabis expressed his commitment to using AI to enhance human health, stating, “It’s time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer.” He plans to collaborate closely with Pichai on strategic global AGI initiatives and provide guidance to Kavukcuoglu and other leaders at DeepMind.
In another significant shift, Jeff Dean, a long-time Google employee and chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is departing alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to establish an AI-focused public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop. Pichai mentioned that Google will be a “founding investor” in this new venture.
Discovery Loop outlines its mission as creating AI solutions that can autonomously tackle critical challenges in machine learning, science, and engineering. Their goal is to accelerate engineering and scientific discovery, ultimately delivering technology solutions that enhance lives globally and serve as a positive force for humanity.
