Minecraft is set to receive enhancements on the Switch 2.

Minecraft is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 this fall, bringing Mojang’s iconic sandbox experience to the new hardware with a significant graphics upgrade.

Mojang revealed that the Switch 2 version of Minecraft will come with the Vibrant Visuals graphics update right out of the box. This update enhances the game with improved lighting, volumetric fog, better water reflections, directional lighting, and more detailed shadows, all while preserving the beloved blocky aesthetic. The game has been specifically optimized for the Switch 2.

Players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch won’t need to repurchase the game. While full details are still pending, Mojang has indicated that there will be an upgrade option for the Switch 2 Edition, allowing existing players to access the native version at a reduced price or through an eligible Minecraft subscription.

The Switch 2 release caps off a busy year for Minecraft, which has seen continuous evolution through a series of updates and new features. The Vibrant Visuals update first appeared in the Chase the Skies update, marking one of the most significant technical enhancements since the game’s debut.

Mojang has also been expanding the sandbox experience with new gameplay elements. The latest update introduces decorative furniture options like cushions and beds, giving players more ways to personalize their homes and create intricate interiors without needing mods. This aligns with the studio’s recent strategy of delivering smaller, more frequent content updates rather than large annual releases. Naturally, this update also led to the creation of in-game whoopee cushions.

The Minecraft franchise is branching out beyond the main game as well. At a recent showcase, Mojang announced Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG, set to launch next year. This sequel will introduce new biomes, enemies, and cooperative adventures while building on the original’s loot-driven gameplay. Additionally, a new film titled A Minecraft Movie Squared is in development, with a release planned for 2027.

Minecraft is arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27.

Run from it, hide from it, more Minecraft arrives all the same.
