Deltarune’s Creator Urges Fans to Embrace the Game’s Pacing in New Update
For those deeply immersed in the Deltarune community, the reaction to the latest chapter has been somewhat mixed. Chapter 5 achieved an impressive peak of 291,816 concurrent players on Steam and garnered acclaim for its memorable characters and emotional depth. However, some dedicated fans expressed disappointment over two key issues.
Firstly, many felt that the chapter didn’t advance the main storyline, opting instead for a standalone adventure that left existing questions unanswered. Secondly, the chapter didn’t align with popular fan theories. These theories often spark debate within the community: some fans produce extensive video essays dissecting every detail, while others dismiss these speculations as overly imaginative, focusing on characters not yet introduced in the game.
In a recent newsletter, developer Toby Fox addressed these concerns with grace. He hinted at the game’s pacing, stating that with this chapter, “we completed the last of the necessary setup for Chapter 6 and 7.” He assured players that moving forward, “there are no more wacky silly adventures, and you will begin to see the results of the setup that has been made so far.”
Fox described Chapter 6 as a shorter, more focused installment that will center on a specific aspect of the story, meaning not every question will be resolved. He ominously noted that “one thing will be clarified, whether you’re ready or not.” He also responded to the pacing critiques, expressing confidence that “by the end of Chapter 7, I’m 100% sure you’ll understand why I feel confident about the way I’m telling this story. Don’t worry about the pacing until it’s over!”
Regarding fan theories, he mentioned, “Personally, I really don’t read or watch theories. That’s because I already know what my game is.” He acknowledged the enthusiasm of fans speculating about the game, stating that “thinking about this game can be just as much of the experience as playing it.” He emphasized that “the speculative art, stories, and theories that you come up with while the game is still ongoing will forever be special, because this is the only time such things can EVER be created.”
However, he also pointed out that “sometimes you don’t have all the information, or I had a different expectation about how certain info would be interpreted or combined.” He encouraged fans to keep an open mind about the game’s direction and to enjoy the experience. Fox reiterated that he anticipates Chapter 6 will be released in 2027 as another standalone entry.
While Fox remains respectful of the community’s passion for theorizing, he firmly asserts that he is crafting his own narrative and encourages fans to approach it with minimal preconceived notions. Interestingly, the response to his newsletter has been largely positive, with fans appreciating his balance of acknowledging their love for speculation while asserting his storytelling vision. Many have decided to trust the creator behind such beloved games.
It also helps that Fox shared a charming anecdote about how Flowey’s quirky phrase “Jarona” originated from random comments made by his older brother while pretending to be an anime character. Never change, Toby.
Nearly 300,000 players and two chart-topping tracks for Toby Fox.
