A New Ghost Recon Game is Coming After a 7-Year Wait
Ubisoft has dropped a wealth of news about the Ghost Recon franchise in honor of its 25th anniversary, including the exciting announcement of a new game in development.
During the anniversary stream, live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa revealed, “For the past few years, we’ve been building the next chapter of Ghost Recon. I’m really excited to share with you that now we’re ready to put it to the test because we want to deliver a fun, fresh experience that stays true to everything that defines Ghost Recon: tactical action, large-scale operations, credible military storytelling, and of course, the Ghost Unit.” Fans were invited to join the Ghost Recon Insider Program for a chance to participate in upcoming closed tests.
While the existence of the new game was confirmed, details were scarce. The stream didn’t showcase a trailer, screenshots, or even a title for the upcoming project. However, leaks have provided some insight into what players might expect. Reports suggest that the game, codenamed Project OVR, has faced a rocky development journey over the past few years. It appears that Project OVR will shift away from the open-world looter-shooter mechanics of recent titles, returning instead to a more traditional tactical shooter experience, complete with a first-person perspective.
Additionally, during the anniversary stream, Ubisoft announced a significant update for 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. The Last Rites update is now live, introducing a new mission and offering players extensive customization options for gameplay elements such as enemy behavior, time of day, weather, and damage values. The update also brings 4K/60FPS support for current-gen consoles. To celebrate the anniversary, Ghost Recon Wildlands will be free to play from August 6-10.
Will the long-awaited Project OVR finally make its official debut?
