Sony Issues Warning Labels on PS5s Regarding Discless Gaming Future
Sony seems to be taking proactive steps by introducing new warnings for consumers regarding its PlayStation 5 consoles equipped with disc drives. A fresh sticker has been discovered on the latest PS5 restocks, alerting buyers that starting January 2028, games “will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.”
As noted by a user on social media, a photo of this “Important Notice” sticker has surfaced, indicating Sony’s move towards a digital-only future. The console in the image appears to be a 1TB standard disc-drive version of the PlayStation 5.
The text on the sticker states: “IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
Many gamers are understandably skeptical about the authenticity of the image, given how easily it could be fabricated. While the source of the image claims it was provided by a “trusted source” and promises an unboxing video soon, there’s a more credible indication of this change.
The Amazon listing in Germany for the 1TB “Standard” edition of the PlayStation 5 has recently been updated to include the same sticker seen in the earlier image. While anyone could potentially create a fake sticker, only a select few at Amazon have the authority to modify images for such a well-known product.
It’s worth noting that Sony is likely taking these precautions to protect itself. The update to the German listing may simply be in compliance with EU consumer laws, which mandate that consumers receive adequate notice if the functionality of an electronic device is set to change or become obsolete at a future date.
