Meet D.Mon: Overwatch’s Armored Core-Inspired Melee Tank, Not Just Another D.Va Clone

The next hero joining the roster in Overwatch is D.Mon, the second playable member of Korea’s MEKA Squad. Like her teammate D.Va, she’s a former esports champion and a skilled mech pilot.

However, D.Mon is crafted to stand apart from D.Va. She embodies the classic “sword and board” archetype, drawing inspiration from the Armored Core series and Gundam anime, as revealed in a recent interview.

While both D.Mon (Yuna Lee) and D.Va (Hana Song) are mech-based tanks, Blizzard aims to highlight their unique personalities and play styles. D.Va is the aggressive, spotlight-stealing member of the MEKA Squad, while D.Mon takes on a leadership role, ready to support her team or act as a tank.

D.Mon’s abilities seem to take cues from another tank in the game: Reinhardt. In her mech form, D.Mon wields a Plasma Sword for close combat, swinging it to slash at enemies. She also has a shoulder-mounted Fusion Repeater for ranged attacks, firing short, precise bursts. D.Mon can deploy a shield, which appears to be more for personal protection due to its narrower design. Additionally, she has a horizontal dash powered by a fuel meter, allowing her to maneuver across the battlefield like an Armored Core mech.

Her kit includes Surging Strike, which involves raising her shield and then using her primary fire to dash forward and knock back opponents. Her ultimate ability, Limit Break, charges her sword to hit multiple enemies while applying a debuff similar to Zenyatta’s Discord. After using Limit Break, D.Mon also gains overhealth.

Similar to D.Va, D.Mon will eject from her mech, known as “Beast,” when it’s critically damaged. In pilot form, she can grab the Fusion Repeater from her mech and use it like a minigun. After a cooldown, D.Mon can call her mech back, but instead of crashing down like D.Va’s “Toki,” Beast reassembles around her, dramatically piecing itself back together and pushing back any nearby foes.

Hero producer Kenny Hudson mentioned that D.Mon was designed to broaden the melee tank options in the game.

“Reinhardt has been an incredibly fun character for a decade,” Hudson stated, “and we wanted to offer another take on that, giving players who enjoy close-quarters tank gameplay more options.”

“D.Mon will have similar counters to Reinhardt or Doomfist, where verticality can be a disadvantage. However, she boasts excellent horizontal movement and the ability to flank while still holding her ground, allowing her to control the battlefield more effectively. We wanted to explore what happens when you give a melee tank enhanced mobility…”

D.Mon’s introduction coincides with the narrative shift to Busan, which is under siege by the Junkers—Junker Queen, Wrecking Ball, Junkrat, and Roadhog—under the command of Talon leader Vendetta. This development will advance the story of the MEKA Squad and the dynamic between D.Va and D.Mon.

“Since D.Va’s departure, the MEKA Squad has been navigating changes in their leadership and strategies against the Gwishin,” said narrative designer Eleni Rivera. “This gives us a chance to see D.Mon step up as a leader within the MEKA Squad.”

With D.Mon’s arrival, players can expect deeper insights into D.Va’s character, their friendship, and the overall state of the MEKA Squad.

Rivera noted that adapting an existing character posed a unique challenge for the team. D.Mon has appeared in previous narrative materials, such as comics, and the goal was to expand her character beyond a single dimension while differentiating her from D.Va.

“The challenge wasn’t just creating a new character, but figuring out how to make her dynamic and distinct,” Rivera explained. “D.Mon carries herself with composure—she’s like an untouchable, cool ice queen. She’s also a huge Gundam fan, often found tinkering and building in her room. Her competitive spirit shines through, as she is a gamer.”

“I like to joke that if she were a streamer, she’d be the one with the camera focused solely on her gameplay, not showing her face. She enjoys taunting and provoking to motivate her team and intimidate enemies.”

D.Mon will make her debut in Overwatch with season 4, launching on August 11. She’ll be the game’s 53rd hero and its 15th tank.
