Understanding the Price Difference: Why GTA 6 Costs $80 While NBA 2K27 Is Priced at $70

When Grand Theft Auto 6 drops later this year, it will be priced at $80, with a premium edition available for $100 that includes additional content. Interestingly, not all titles from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, are hitting that $80 mark. So, what’s the reasoning behind this? According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the company aims to provide “phenomenal value” rather than simply charging the maximum possible price, even with the immense hype surrounding GTA 6.

During a Q1 FY27 earnings call on August 7, Zelnick addressed investor inquiries, particularly about the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. When asked why GTA 6 is priced at $80 while other AAA titles, like NBA 2K2, are only $70, Zelnick explained, “We have said this many, many times. Our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge them. The reality is that the actual cost of a AAA video game is significantly lower today than it was two decades ago. Pricing hasn’t kept up with inflation. We want to consistently overdeliver to consumers because your perception of any experience is shaped by both the experience itself and its cost.”

Zelnick emphasized that GTA 6 is undoubtedly worth $80 or more, stating, “To say that we expect GTA 6 to be an incredible bargain in terms of experiences is a gross understatement. Rockstar Games is known for overdelivering. Our aim is not to maximize price, so our decision here makes a lot of sense.”

It appears that Rockstar and Take-Two could have even considered a higher price for the standard edition, given the excitement surrounding GTA 6. Zelnick noted, “I think Rockstar believes that offering phenomenal value at $80 makes sense for some consumers, while providing additional value at a slightly higher price works for others. Given the hype around this title, we could have explored various pricing options.”

Despite the price tag, it seems players are undeterred, as Take-Two revealed impressive pre-order numbers ahead of the call, a sentiment Zelnick echoed during his discussion with investors. “Our pre-orders are exceptional. No one has ever seen anything like this before at Take-Two. They are so unprecedented that we genuinely don’t know how they will translate into sales.”

GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox, and it will be a digital-only release.
