Xbox’s Hidden Advantage Amidst Internal Turmoil

Microsoft’s Xbox division has faced a challenging year, with over 3,000 employees being laid off as part of a significant restructuring. This shake-up has resulted in the separation of several well-regarded studios, including Double Fine and Ninja Theory, from Microsoft’s ownership. However, amidst this upheaval, Blizzard has emerged as a standout performer.

According to a report, internal communications reveal that Blizzard has claimed the title of the “top performing” studio within Xbox. Blizzard President Johanna Faries shared this news with staff, highlighting the studio’s impressive achievements under Microsoft’s umbrella.

Faries reportedly stated that in fiscal year 2026, Blizzard finished as the leading studio in Xbox’s portfolio, marking the third highest revenue year in the company’s history. She noted that this fiscal year, spanning from August 2025 to July 2026, was the first time Blizzard experienced consecutive quarters of growth since the launch of Overwatch in 2016.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that Blizzard did not release a new game during this past year, instead relying on live service revenue and DLC sales. The expansion for Diablo 4, titled Lord of Hatred, was released on April 28, 2026, introducing new classes, gameplay enhancements, and additional areas to explore.

Faries emphasized that Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred and Overwatch significantly contributed to this success, with Overwatch achieving its best quarter since 2022. This year also marked a strategic shift for Overwatch, as the company dropped the “2” from its title, indicating a commitment to ongoing support for the game. Notably, Blizzard introduced five new heroes on February 10, the largest single addition since the game’s debut, with plans for a total of 10 new heroes in 2026, seven of which have already been released.

The next character, D.mon, a melee tank in a mech suit, is set to join Overwatch on August 11. This clearly signals Blizzard’s renewed focus on supporting its live service shooter. While there’s no confirmation yet on whether this rapid pace will continue into 2027, the recent financial success suggests it’s a strong possibility.

Despite Blizzard’s recent achievements, the studio has had to navigate significant controversies in the past, including serious allegations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct. A lawsuit filed in 2021 by California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing accused Blizzard of fostering a “frat boy” culture. Although Blizzard’s legal team denied these claims, the company agreed to pay over $50 million to settle the gender discrimination lawsuit in 2023, primarily for compensation to affected employees.

While the future remains somewhat uncertain, it’s clear that Xbox has a clearer direction moving forward.
