“About Fishing Impresses, and The Weeknd’s Endorsement Only Adds to Its Appeal”
In a recent chat, music icon Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, shared his thoughts on a game called About Fishing. While the title suggests a simple fishing experience, it belies the eerie atmosphere that permeates the game.
About Fishing is a horror title reminiscent of PSX classics. The prologue serves as a tutorial where you step into the shoes of a young girl learning to fish with her father. The fishing mechanics are intuitive: pull back the mouse and then push it forward to cast your line, battling the tug of the fish as you reel it in. The prologue takes a dark turn when you stumble upon a body submerged in the water, kicking off a murder mystery wrapped in a fishing theme.
Fast forward, and the girl is now an adult, grappling with the revelation that her father is imprisoned for the murders. It’s your mission to unravel the mystery. As you fish, you’ll encounter various species, each with unique behaviors, and you can sell your catches to upgrade your gear. While exploring the quaint village setting, you’ll interact with a cast of characters, each boasting their own distinct personalities and engaging dialogue.
“The atmosphere of About Fishing hooked me right away,” Tesfaye remarked. “It reminded me of my cousin’s collection of burned Sega Dreamcast games, including some rare Japanese titles. About Fishing brought back that nostalgic feeling.” He referenced classics like Shenmue, Seaman, and Power Stone. Tesfaye even arranged a five-hour session with the studio behind the game, where a developer showcased its features.
Tesfaye’s endorsement is well-deserved; About Fishing was among my top picks from the summer’s Steam Next Fest, and it’s still available to try out. On his secondary Instagram account, gene.hackerman, dedicated to gaming and his other interests, he recently visited Atlus to check out Persona 4 Revival and hinted at getting an early look at Persona 6. His feed also features moments with legendary game creators like Suda51, Yoko Taro, and Hidetaka Miyazaki.
You should definitely give About Fishing a shot, not just because The Weeknd is a fan. It stands out as one of the most intriguing and innovative indie games currently in development, poised to become a sleeper hit. Look for its release on Steam in late 2026.
