Another OpenAI Leader Departures from the Company

Brad Lightcap, who led special projects at OpenAI and previously served as COO, has announced his departure after eight years with the organization. In a memo shared with colleagues on X, he expressed his excitement about embarking on “something new.”

“Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success,” Lightcap stated. “I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. I … am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point.” He mentioned that he would remain available for the next few weeks.

Lightcap’s responsibilities have evolved significantly over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his role as COO expanded to encompass oversight of OpenAI’s business and daily operations, global deployment, and a focus on business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure, and operational excellence to enhance the impact of their research. By January 2026, he stepped back from leading the enterprise push in product and engineering while retaining oversight of commercial functions. Following this, in April, he officially transitioned from his COO position to lead the team’s special projects, reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. Denise Dresser, the company’s CRO, assumed a substantial portion of his previous responsibilities.

Lightcap’s exit is part of a broader trend of high-profile departures from OpenAI’s executive team in recent months. AGI chief Fidji Simo left her position in July after a medical leave, and CMO Kate Rouch also stepped down in April for health reasons. The company has undergone significant reorganization, with president Greg Brockman taking charge of product development, and a commitment to streamline operations by focusing on key revenue drivers as it prepares for a public offering in the coming year.

“It always amazes me how quickly the world has adopted our tools and rallied behind our mission,” Lightcap reflected. “I hope we will continue to earn their trust.”
