Sony Goes All-Digital with Exclusive Wolverine Console Release
Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be one of the standout titles for Sony this year, so it’s no surprise that the company is launching special-edition PlayStation 5 consoles alongside the game next month. However, the recent decision to halt the production of physical discs has stirred up controversy, and the introduction of a digital-only console without a disc drive is likely to frustrate those already upset.
This new system features console plates emblazoned with Wolverine’s fierce visage, along with claw marks that give the impression Logan has slashed through your console. Both the console and the matching controllers come in two color schemes: a vibrant yellow reminiscent of the hero’s suit and a sleek silver that mimics his adamantium claws. Pre-orders kick off on August 19 at 10 a.m. local time, with the official launch set for September 15, coinciding with the game’s release. The yellow variant will be available at select retailers, while the silver edition will be exclusive to PlayStation’s direct store.
The major point of contention is that these consoles are digital-only, meaning if you were hoping for a version of the Wolverine console with a built-in disc drive, you’re out of luck. Sony’s trailer makes this clear, but you can expect plenty of comments in the announcement thread echoing this sentiment. Some may see this move as part of Sony’s ongoing shift toward an all-digital future, especially after the decision to stop producing PlayStation discs. However, the company will offer console covers separately for both digital and disc-drive models, so if you already own a PS5 and want to sport Logan’s face on it, you can do so—provided you have the Slim model released in 2023. If you’re just now considering a PS5 and want a Wolverine console with a disc drive, you’ll need to shell out $650 for the console and an additional $75 for the face plates.
