Ocarina of Time Remake Confirmed for Release

The rumors have been confirmed: Nintendo is set to remake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2. This reimagining of the beloved Nintendo 64 classic, often regarded as one of the greatest games ever, is scheduled for release in 2026 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Zelda series.

While details are sparse, the game promises a complete visual overhaul, moving away from the aesthetics of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo describes this new version of Ocarina of Time as being “reborn” on the Switch 2.

The reveal trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (2026) is short but impactful, featuring narration from the Great Deku Tree reminiscent of the original game’s opening. We see Link, the only Kokiri without a fairy, tossing and turning in his sleep. In a nod to the original, Link experiences a vision of Sheik and Zelda fleeing Hyrule Castle while being chased by Ganondorf. In this remake, the Triforce begins to glow on Link’s left hand during this unsettling dream.

Originally launched in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, Ocarina of Time marked a significant shift for the series, transitioning from a 2D, top-down perspective to immersive 3D environments. It also introduced innovative features like the target-lock system (known as Z-targeting) and context-sensitive buttons, which have since become staples in 3D adventure games.

Nintendo re-released Ocarina of Time for the GameCube in 2003, pairing it with the challenging Master Quest mode as a pre-order bonus for another title. A remake with stereoscopic 3D effects and various quality-of-life enhancements was launched for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

Other titles in the Zelda franchise have received “HD” or “DX” updates, including The Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess. The most notable reimagining to date is the Switch version of Link’s Awakening, which debuted in 2019 with a striking new visual style.

Earlier this year, Nintendo and Lego unveiled a buildable set featuring the iconic final battle from Ocarina of Time. This 1,003-piece Lego set includes a giant Ganondorf and minifigures of Link and Zelda, retailing for $129.99.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has exciting plans for the Zelda franchise in 2027. A live-action film directed by Wes Ball will bring the series to theaters for the first time. The untitled movie stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda, with a release date set for April 30, 2027.

While the N64 classic laid the groundwork for modern open-world games, it remains a unique experience all its own.
