Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho is said to be renewed for a second season.

After a long period of silence, it looks like Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho is gearing up for a second season. Reports indicate that filming will kick off this fall, with plans to cover the Demon World Unification Tournament arc.

The first season premiered on December 14, 2023, and received a mixed reception. While the fight scenes were lauded for effectively capturing the essence of the original battle shonen material, the show struggled with pacing, attempting to condense over half of the source material—66 episodes of the anime and 112 chapters of the manga—into just five episodes. This led to a narrative that felt emotionally hollow compared to the original.

If the latest reports hold true, the upcoming season may face similar challenges. The Demon World Unification Tournament is the concluding arc of the series, meaning this season will need to adapt the remaining story, which includes 46 anime episodes and 63 manga chapters.

Takumi Kitamura will reprise his role as Yusuke Urameshi, the main character. Joining him are Shun Oguri, Nobuaki Kaneko, Mirai Moriyama, and Mizuki Yamamoto, who will portray various inhabitants of the demon world.

For those who may not be familiar, Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who dies in a traffic accident while saving a child, granting him a second chance as a spirit detective. However, Yusuke’s role isn’t as much about detective work as it is about battling adversaries who threaten the delicate balance between the Human, Spirit, and Demon Worlds. Created by Yoshihiro Togashi, the manga ran from 1990 to 1994, while the anime aired from 1992 to 1995, and it remains a cornerstone of the battle shonen genre, having been well-received during its original run.

While live-action adaptations of anime often face criticism, Netflix has seen success with this format recently, particularly with its well-received take on One Piece. That series is set to return in 2027 for a third season, which will adapt the Alabasta arc.

Yusuke’s journey, much like in the original manga, will traverse various genres as needed.
