Meccha Chameleon Surges Past 20 Million Sales Milestone
Even in the realm of viral indie games, *Meccha Chameleon* stands out. Since its launch about two months ago, it has achieved an impressive 20 million copies sold, making it a strong contender for the highest-selling game of the year. The developers, lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, shared this milestone on the game’s Steam news hub.
In early July, Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics reported that *Meccha Chameleon* was the top seller for the first half of 2026, with 12.6 million copies sold. Its closest rivals included *FC26* at 9.1 million, *Resident Evil Requiem* at 7.5 million, *Forza Horizon 6* at 7.4 million, *Arc Raiders* at 7.4 million, and *Slay the Spire 2* at 7 million. Interestingly, the biggest surprise since then has been the PlayStation 4 and 5 ports of *Call of Duty: Black Ops 2* and *Black Ops*, which sold 8.2 million and 3 million copies, respectively, in July.
For those unfamiliar with *Meccha Chameleon*, it’s a hide-and-seek game where players blend into their surroundings using digital painting tools. Its unique take on prop hunt-style gameplay and the hilarious moments it creates have made it a new favorite among friends.
However, the game faced some serious cybersecurity issues last month. An independent researcher discovered that hackers had embedded viruses in certain user-created Steam Workshop maps. When these maps were launched, they executed an invisible command prompt that installed a remote access Trojan, giving hackers control over the victim’s PC. A developer’s test machine was compromised this way, with the attacker temporarily seizing control of the game’s official Discord channel. Although the issue was patched, the extent of the impact on users remains unclear.
Despite this setback, *Meccha Chameleon* continues to perform exceptionally well. While it has seen a decline from its peak of over 340,000 concurrent players on Steam, its overall success has been remarkable. Last year, *Peak* and *R.E.P.O.* also enjoyed significant popularity, attracting 14.5 million and 19.2 million players, respectively. Despite the genre’s often tongue-in-cheek label, it’s evident that friendslop is here to stay.
