Dawn of War 4 Pushed Back to Compete with GTA 6 Release
While many developers are hesitant to launch new titles around the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19, it appears that Space Marines are undeterred. Deep Silver and King Art Games have decided to push back the release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 from September 17 to December 3, just two weeks after GTA 6.
This shift could actually benefit Dawn of War 4, as it allows the strategy game to avoid a particularly crowded September lineup, which includes titles like Control Resonant, Marvel’s Wolverine, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Blood of the Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall, and more.
Game director Jan Theysen shared in a video that the delay is necessary for King Art Games to incorporate more player feedback, address bugs, enhance performance, and refine the overall experience. Theysen noted that the community’s response from playtests has been encouraging, but the team requires additional time to polish the game.
Additionally, the post-launch roadmap for Dawn of War 4 is being updated, with major content updates now slated for 2027. This includes the highly anticipated Crusade Mode, Mission Editor, and map packs. Players can expect the Blood Ravens Story Prologue DLC in the spring, followed by the Aftermath campaign expansion in the summer. The game will feature four factions at launch: Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Necrons, and Orks.
Dawn of War 4 marks a significant shift, as it will be the first entry in the series not developed by Relic Entertainment, the studio behind the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War released in 2004 and its two sequels in 2009 and 2017. The first two games were praised for their engaging RTS mechanics and thoughtful integration of the Warhammer universe, while Dawn of War 3 received a more mixed reception, currently holding only 47% positive reviews on Steam due to lingering bugs.
King Art Games is stepping up after impressing with their previous RTS title, Iron Harvest. Meanwhile, the Warhammer franchise continues to expand, with various other games and projects in development, including an animated TV series from Amazon and Saber Interactive’s Warhammer: Space Marine 3.
And SGF 2026 has only just begun.
