Amazon pulls the plug on two more MMOs, signaling a retreat from gaming.

Massively multiplayer online games Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty are set to part ways with Amazon Game Studios as their publisher in the coming months, marking a significant shift in the tech giant’s gaming strategy.

Recent updates on both MMOs’ official sites confirmed this development. Amazon Game Studios will first step back from supporting Throne and Liberty, with this transition expected in Q4 2026. After this change, publishing responsibilities will shift to FirstSpark Games and NC (formerly NCSoft). Players can expect to retain access to their existing characters and accounts on PC and consoles unless they opt out of transferring their data to NC.

Following that, Lost Ark will undergo a similar transition in early 2027, with developer Smilegate taking over western publishing duties. When this change occurs, Lost Ark players will keep their progression, account details, ship, playlist, and NPC names. However, they will lose access to in-game mail, friends lists, blacklists, guilds, strongholds, and chat messages. As with Throne and Liberty, players can choose to opt out of data transfer to Smilegate if they prefer.

Amazon Game Studios aimed to be a leading MMO publisher in the early 2020s, launching New World and facilitating the arrival of Asian titles like Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty in North America and Europe. However, since last October, the company has been scaling back its gaming initiatives. This has included setting an end-of-service date for New World, shutting down King of Meat, withdrawing from publishing Maverick Games’ Clutch and MOBAMarch of Giants, and laying off developers.

Currently, the only projects Amazon Game Studios is still committed to are Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, and various party games for its cloud gaming service, Luna. Additionally, Amazon gaming GM Jeff Gattis has expressed interest in publishing future James Bond games.

Lost Ark is available on Windows PC, while Throne and Liberty can be played on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
