Phantom Blade Zero Goes All-Digital for Pre-Orders, Sparking Worries Over Lack of Physical Edition

Late last night, a fresh extended trailer for S-Game’s Phantom Blade Zero was unveiled, along with the announcement of a dedicated State of Play showcase set for August 17. In addition, pre-orders for the game have officially launched on both the PlayStation Store and Steam, but the absence of physical purchase options for Phantom Blade Zero has left fans feeling uneasy.

The pre-order details for Phantom Blade Zero were shared in a post on the PlayStation Blog on August 1. Following the link will direct you to the PlayStation Store, where you can grab a digital copy of the game.

While the lack of a physical version on the PlayStation Store isn’t entirely surprising—given that the game is a PS5 console exclusive for the first 12 months and is self-published by S-Game—there are still no indications of a physical disc release for Phantom Blade Zero.

It seems S-Game may not have secured a partner for a physical edition, which could mean it might be released later or not at all.

Physical copies of first-party, Sony-published games can only be purchased through the PlayStation website, which is standard practice. However, if you compare the PlayStation Blog post for this game to that of Silent Hill 2—another title that was exclusive to PlayStation 5 for its first year—you’ll notice that the latter explicitly mentions a physical release, while Phantom Blade Zero’s post does not.

Moreover, as pointed out by Genki in a post on X, the extended reveal trailer for Phantom Blade Zero on the official PlayStation YouTube channel has replaced the disc-drive version of the standard PS5 with the digital model. This marks the first time Sony has showcased this specific version in one of its promotional trailers.

This, combined with S-Game’s silence on any physical edition, has sparked concerns among fans on the r/PhantomBladeZero subreddit that the game may be exclusively digital on PlayStation 5. There’s still hope that if the game does go digital-only due to Sony’s push for a disc-less future, the Xbox Series version of Phantom Blade Zero might still see a physical release.

Inquiries have been made to S-Game regarding the possibility of a disc release for Phantom Blade Zero, but no response has been received as of yet.
