Grab 2025’s Exciting Co-Op RPG for Free While You Can!
Scheduling a tabletop RPG can be a real challenge. You need a group of enthusiastic players, a willing game master, a solid grasp of a hefty rulebook, and, perhaps the toughest part, a night when everyone is available.
This is why video game adaptations of tabletop experiences have gained so much popularity. Take *Baldur’s Gate 3*, for instance, which immerses you in the Forgotten Realms with a mind flayer tadpole nestled in your head and a cast of unforgettable companions. Or *Gloomhaven*, where you lead a team of mercenaries through a dark fantasy world filled with ancient ruins, perilous dungeons, and increasingly dangerous contracts. The best part? These games manage all the rules for you, sparing you the headache of relying on a friend who barely skimmed the rulebook before game night.
For a limited time, there’s an easy and free way to experience another take on this formula.
Enter *Sunderfolk*, a tactical RPG from Secret Door, a team of former Blizzard developers. This game captures the essence of a tabletop campaign—complete with a colorful party of heroes, turn-based battles, quests, loot, and a host of monsters—while handling the nitty-gritty details for you. From August 13-16, *Sunderfolk* is available to play for free on Xbox as part of Xbox Free Play Days.
At its heart, *Sunderfolk* is a turn-based tactical RPG designed to evoke the feel of a tabletop campaign without the need for anyone to memorize a rulebook. Players can choose from six animal heroes, including a mighty bear Berserker, a bat Bard, and a fire-wielding Pyromancer, embarking on missions from the town of Arden across hex-based battlefields.
The encounters quickly evolve beyond just surrounding and attacking monsters. Maps are filled with hazards, objectives, and opportunities to push enemies into pits or, in one standout mission from our review, directly into the path of giant beetles used as mine carts.
What sets this game apart is its control scheme. While *Sunderfolk* runs on your TV or monitor, each player uses a phone or tablet as their controller, character sheet, and hand of ability cards. This setup allows you to aim attacks and movements on the shared screen while keeping all the essential RPG details—abilities, equipment, monster stats, and more—right in your hand. Our review found this approach surprisingly intuitive, as it lets the big screen serve as the game board rather than cluttering it with menus.
Instead of traditional dice, abilities are drawn from a customizable deck of Fate Cards, introducing a light deck-building element to the tactical combat. Between quests, players return to Arden to upgrade their party and interact with the townsfolk, with some choices and conversations delivered privately to individual players’ devices. This is part of why we’ve highlighted *Sunderfolk* as an excellent alternative to tabletop gaming—it manages the rules and bookkeeping, allowing you to focus on the fun decisions.
*Sunderfolk* is charming, accessible, and just complex enough to satisfy that tabletop craving without requiring a long-term commitment. With the game available for free for a few days, gathering some friends to give it a try is a no-brainer. At the very least, you’ll have a free game night lined up.
