Fans Believe They’ve Uncovered the Title of the Upcoming Elder Scrolls Game
If you thought the speculation around GTA 6 was intense, just wait until you dive into the world of The Elder Scrolls fans. Since the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 15 years ago, players have been eagerly awaiting any news about the long-delayed sixth installment in this iconic RPG series. Recently, excitement surged when Xbox’s new head, Asha Sharma, shared on X that she had managed to play the upcoming game and was blown away by its “scale and grandeur.” However, she referred to it as “The Elder Scrolls VI: ********,” leaving fans buzzing with curiosity.
EIGHT ASTERISKS?! What could that possibly signify? It’s hard to believe it was just a slip of the keyboard. This has to be the start of an intricate puzzle or an alternate reality game that will eventually reveal the title. Bethesda even added to the intrigue by responding with the same number of asterisks.
The leading theory making the rounds is that the game will be titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Why? Because it fits the eight-letter requirement, and Sentinel is a prominent Redguard city in Hammerfell, which many believe will be the game’s setting. Other contenders with eight letters include Dominion, Balfiera, and Orsinium.
But here’s a wild twist: what if Bethesda’s Starfield hinted at the title Sentinel years ago? Some speculate that a character’s ARGOS employee number in Starfield’s character creation section cleverly spells out SENTINEL. That’s quite the coincidence if it wasn’t intentional. However, it could just be a fun Easter egg for Starfield itself, with no ties to another game. Still, Sentinel is a significant port city in Hammerfell, and it would make for an awesome title. It even has historical significance, as it was used as a game title by Geoff Crammond back in 1990.
Things get even more intriguing when a former Bethesda developer, Michael Kirkbride, chimed in on Reddit with a simple “Yep,” seemingly confirming Sentinel as the title.
I have to admit, for the past 15 years, I’ve been trying to plant the idea that the next Elder Scrolls game would be called Hammerfell, casually dropping the name in various articles across the web. Why? Because Bethesda blacklisted my old site after I criticized the Elder Scrolls Online beta, and I thought if I kept mentioning it as if it were fact, it might stir up some panic and lead to frantic calls. I know, it’s a bit petty.
I’ve done this on multiple platforms! I was pushing it a decade ago on Rock Paper Shotgun and probably got it into PC Gamer too. I even tried to sneak it onto Polygon and The Escapist. So if these new theories hold any weight, it’s nice to think I at least guessed the right region, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Hammerfell was a working title at some point—long before it became the popular theory for the game’s setting.
I guess I’ll have to stop now that I’ve come clean. Anyway, The Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell is still believed to be at least two years away, despite this recent attempt to reassure fans in light of the recent upheaval at Microsoft’s gaming divisions.
