Marvel Rivals Developer Faces Fan Outcry Over Storm’s Summer Skin, Quickly Reverses Decision

Summer is here, bringing sunny days, park picnics, and some of the most revealing outfits in Marvel Rivals. The latest skin drop for this superhero shooter from NetEase Games features beach-themed attire for Storm, Magik, and Scarlet Witch. However, Storm’s skin sparked quite a debate within the community upon its reveal, prompting a swift response from the developers.

The controversy revolves around the tier assignments for the new skins. In Marvel Rivals, skins are categorized as Rare, Epic, or Legendary, with higher tiers costing more and offering additional features. While Magik and Scarlet Witch’s summer skins are classified as Legendary, Storm’s is only Epic.

This disparity ignited discussions among fans about character representation and content distribution. To put it in perspective, Storm has just one Legendary skin, whereas Magik boasts six and Scarlet Witch has five. Notably, Storm is the only female character in the game to receive a summer skin that isn’t at the Legendary tier. Fans felt there was no clear justification for Storm’s skin being Epic while the others were Legendary, leading many to view the decision as a slight against her.

The backlash to the initial announcement of Storm’s skin was so significant that NetEase Games quickly addressed the concerns within about 12 hours. In a detailed post on Marvel Rivals’ social media, the developers acknowledged the community’s feedback and outlined their plan to make things right. Storm’s Sacred Skies skin will be upgraded to Legendary at no extra cost, complete with a new lobby animation and an updated MVP animation. The price will remain at $16, and players will also receive an ultimate-effect upgrade that enhances the visual effects of Storm’s ultimate ability. Additionally, the developers promised that Storm would be getting more Legendary tier costumes in the future, although no specific release dates have been provided.
