“Black Mirror Director Hilariously Declines Offer to Direct HBO’s Harry Potter”
The casting process for the upcoming HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter series has been quite the rollercoaster. Fans have reacted with shock and dismay at some of the choices, exclaiming things like, “Oh no, not John Lithgow!” and “Peter Serafinowicz, what are you doing?!” The standout moment, however, came from Black Mirror director Ally Pankiw, who, when asked about her interest in the project, responded with a blunt, “Absolutely not!” This prompted fellow director Kate Herron, known for Loki and Sex Education, to chime in, revealing she had also turned down the opportunity twice.
HBO’s decision to reboot the Harry Potter franchise in 2026 has raised eyebrows, especially considering the original books’ author, J.K. Rowling, has become notorious for her transphobic comments and has financially supported anti-trans initiatives in the UK. Additionally, the original books are celebrating their 20th anniversary next year, and the previous film adaptations were well-received. It’s a puzzling move.
What’s particularly frustrating is seeing numerous high-profile individuals willing to associate themselves with a project that will inevitably enrich someone who has been vocal in her disdain for the trans community. While many who have declined the offer may not publicly voice their reasons, it creates a skewed perception of the industry, suggesting that financial gain is prioritized over ethical considerations.
Ally Pankiw took to Instagram to share a conversation with her agent, who tentatively asked about her interest in Harry Potter. Pankiw’s response was clear: “Absolutely not! lol” She added, “(But thank you for asking!)” Her agent agreed, acknowledging they had assumed as much.
Pankiw later commented, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” Kate Herron expressed her support, stating, “Yeah thank you exactly! Respect and love to you Ally,” and confirmed she had also been approached about the project, reiterating her firm “no.”
Some cast members of the new Harry Potter series have spoken out against Rowling. Bel Powley, portraying Aunt Petunia Dursley, stated, “I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender. I think the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance.” Nick Frost, cast as Hagrid, took a more measured approach, saying, “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine; they just don’t align in any way, shape, or form.”
The series is set to premiere with eight episodes on HBO on December 25 this year. However, given the lengthy gaps between seasons, it’s hard to see how the show can maintain its audience, especially with the young cast likely aging significantly by the time the series reaches the events of the fourth book.
