Test Your Knowledge: Guess the Game from Its Patch Notes in This Daily Browser Challenge!
Patch notes are often seen as one of the more tedious aspects of gaming. Whenever developers need to address bugs, adjust gameplay balance, or roll out new content, they publish extensive lists detailing all the changes for players to sift through. Now, a new browser game inspired by Wordle challenges players to identify their favorite games based solely on their patch notes.
Created by Håkon Medhus Fornes, Patchdle launched on June 9 and presents one of the toughest tests of gaming knowledge out there. Similar to Wordle, players have six attempts to guess the correct game. With each incorrect guess, additional patch notes are revealed. While these hints are said to become easier with each round, they often come off as a jumble of technical jargon. For instance, recent Patchdle hints include phrases like “adjusted volume for all character jumpscares” and “fixed an issue with inconsistencies when inserting VHS tapes into the VHS player.” Good luck deciphering that!
To assist players, Patchdle offers some helpful clues. If you guess a game from the same franchise, you’ll receive a green message stating, “Correct franchise, but wrong game!” Guessing a title from the same developer yields a yellow message that says, “Made by the same developers!” Beyond that, players are left to rely on the patch notes themselves.
While Patchdle can feel like a daunting challenge, it also showcases the playful side of developers when it comes to their patch notes. Amid the dry technical details, there are plenty of humorous entries and quirky fixes. For example, one hint from the June 10 Patchdle states, “Dead babies now have buoyancy in water,” followed by another that reads, “Can now pick up and throw puffy dead bodies.” Even if the game behind these notes remains a mystery, it certainly piques interest.
Every Patchdle is accessible through an archive, offering over 60 puzzles for players to tackle.
