Apple Develops AI Model for China in Collaboration with Alibaba
Apple has developed a custom AI model tailored for the Chinese market in collaboration with Alibaba, marking a unique partnership amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China. This large language model, designed specifically for China, was created with Alibaba’s assistance, according to sources familiar with the situation.
This move represents a shift from Apple’s earlier approach in China, allowing the company greater control over its offerings in the fiercely competitive smartphone landscape. Previously, Apple relied on local Chinese models for generative AI features in its devices, as U.S. models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT were not accessible in the region.
The news comes as Apple prepares to launch Apple Intelligence in China, expected to debut in the coming months following an update to its iOS operating system. The company recently registered this on-device generative AI service with China’s cyberspace regulator, overcoming a significant regulatory barrier for its rollout.
This China-centric model positions Apple advantageously as it navigates the complex regulatory environment in Beijing, especially amid heightened scrutiny of AI development. In China, AI models must receive government approval before they can be publicly released, making Apple the first U.S. company to secure approval for a proprietary AI model in the country.
