New Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Offers Exciting Glimpse of RDJ’s Character

The cast of the X-Men reboot was just one highlight of the Marvel Cinematic Universe showcase at the recent D23 event. We also got a fresh glimpse of Avengers: Doomsday, which features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom more prominently than anything we’ve seen so far.

In the trailer, the Fantastic Four brief the other MCU heroes about Doom, who has experienced a significant loss that has transformed him into a multiversal threat. This revelation seems to catch the First Family off guard, especially Mr. Fantastic, who is usually Doom’s greatest adversary in most versions of the story. His surprise at the villain’s drastic actions adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

It raises the question of whether the film will keep Doom’s mask on throughout, rendering Downey Jr.’s return after stepping away from Iron Man somewhat irrelevant since audiences might not even see his face. This would be a humorous twist, especially considering the film’s marketing has leaned heavily on nostalgia. It’s still uncertain if the movie will acknowledge that both Doom and Tony Stark are portrayed by the same actor, or if it’s merely a nod to long-time fans who have followed the franchise for nearly two decades or those who dropped off after Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18 and will pave the way for the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to premiere a year later on December 17, 2027.
