A Loot-Focused Star Wars RPG with Jedi and Mandalorians Was Nearly Realized

Gameplay details and insights about a new, previously undisclosed AAA Star Wars action-RPG have emerged. This third-person RPG, reportedly codenamed Magellan, was under development at Echtra Games before being shelved around the studio’s closure in 2025.

Recently, it was revealed that early gameplay footage of Magellan was shared by a developer from Echtra Games. In this footage, viewers can see two distinct characters—a Twi’lek Jedi and a Mandalorian-like soldier—engaging in combat against stormtroopers, gathering loot, and exploring various environments from a third-person perspective. The gameplay highlights a “shoot and loot” mechanic, indicating a blend of action and exploration. Development on Magellan reportedly kicked off in early 2021.

Notably, this anticipated Star Wars action-RPG was designed to feature online multiplayer, as evidenced by the gameplay clip. Players would have the option to select different classes, such as a Jedi, utilizing their unique abilities to battle droids, troopers, and other iconic Star Wars foes. The footage also shows the Jedi character using a blaster, which likely ties into the loot-and-shoot gameplay mechanics. At one point, a character retrieves “Booster Gear” from a defeated enemy and later searches a chest for additional loot, suggesting players could find and equip new blasters even while playing as a lightsaber-wielding Jedi.

Additionally, it was reported that Magellan was set to include an NPC bonding system, allowing players to build relationships with characters as they embarked on missions and fought alongside them. The game was being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and aimed for release on PS5, Xbox, and PC. However, following organizational changes at Zynga and Take-Two, the project was ultimately canceled, leading to the closure of Echtra Games in 2025.

This canceled Star Wars RPG joins the ranks of other abandoned projects in the franchise, including Ragtag, Respawn’s Mandalorian game, the notorious 1313, the intriguing Darth Maul project, and Star Wars Battlefront III.
