YouTube is revamping its view-counting method to enhance viewer statistics.
YouTube is set to change how it counts views, aligning with the methods used by platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Starting August 24th, a view will be counted as soon as a video begins to play, which is expected to boost total view counts for creators.
Both Instagram and TikTok add a view when a video starts or replays, while X counts a view if a user watches a video for at least two seconds. YouTube adopted the same view-counting approach for Shorts last year.
The platform will maintain its original view-counting method under an “engaged views” metric in its Analytics dashboard. While the specifics of the previous view-counting method were somewhat unclear, it was commonly believed that a viewer needed to watch at least 30 seconds of a standard YouTube video for it to count.
Importantly, this change won’t affect creators’ earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Earnings will continue to be based on “engaged Short views” and “engaged watch hours.”
This update is part of a broader trend, as YouTube is also raising the requirements for joining the YPP next year. The platform acknowledges that it has historically used various view-counting systems across different formats, but it aims to simplify this for creators. By standardizing metrics, YouTube hopes to provide a clearer understanding of overall exposure for creators.
