David Tennant is set to reprise his role in Doctor Who in 2027.

A few days back, I mentioned how great it would be if the powers that be would ease up on David Tennant in their quest to save Doctor Who from the brink of cancellation. I still believe that.

However, the universe has answered the calls of fans eager for more of Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. That’s right—there’s more timey-wimey fun ahead, as he’s set to reprise his iconic role in a new audio drama from a well-known British production company that specializes in Doctor Who audio stories.

This time, instead of reuniting with familiar faces like Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, or Donna Noble, Tennant will be teaming up with a companion who might be a bit of a surprise for those who only know the main series. Enter Anjli Mohindra, returning as Rani Chandra. The upcoming 12-episode audio drama series, titled Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani, is slated for release in August 2027.

Rani first appeared in the 2008 Doctor Who spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, where she teamed up with Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, and the beloved robot dog K9 to help the former companion Sarah Jane Smith fend off alien threats. With Sarah Jane as her mentor, Rani developed her journalism skills, eventually becoming one of the top journalists in the world after Sarah Jane’s passing.

In this audio drama, the Doctor and Rani reunite, bonded by their shared connection to Sarah Jane. According to the latest news, their new adventures will take them to modern-day Cumbria to investigate cryptids, crash the set of a 1970s sci-fi show, and tackle a major crisis during the coronation of Elizabeth I. With the Doctor, there’s never a dull moment.

This isn’t the first encounter between the Doctor and Rani. The Tenth Doctor previously appeared in “The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith” from The Sarah Jane Adventures, although Rani was much younger back then. It remains to be seen if that earlier meeting will play a role in their new adventures.

While Tennant’s return to Doctor Who may not be the grand comeback some fans envisioned for the TV series, this 12-episode audio journey offers Whovians a chance to enjoy more of Tennant before his regeneration.

Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani will be available in August 2027.

Most of the gang is gearing up for a new adventure in space!
