GTA 6 Sparks Major Debate Over Fuel Requirements for Vehicles
In the past couple of days, leaked gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 has made its way across the internet, hinting at the introduction of a fuel mechanic. This could mean players will need to refuel their vehicles periodically while cruising around. The prospect has reignited a long-standing debate within the GTA community about the necessity of gas for cars. Some players are thrilled about the potential for increased immersion, while others are hoping for an option to disable the feature.
On August 18, a user known as Cyberleek shared what appears to be early gameplay footage of GTA 6, along with what looks like the game’s complete map. In the leaked clips, an icon indicating fuel levels can be seen, complete with a meter that depletes over time. This fuel gauge appears in multiple clips as the character Jason hops into various vehicles, including a semi-truck and a standard car.
Since these leaks may originate from earlier builds, it’s unclear whether this feature will make it into the final game or how it will function.
Despite the uncertainty, many in the GTA community are assuming that the fuel gauge will be a part of the main game, suggesting that players will need to manage their fuel levels and stop to refuel during gameplay. For a significant portion of the fanbase, this detail is a major talking point, eliciting both excitement and apprehension.
One of the most popular posts on a GTA 6 subreddit features a screenshot of the fuel gauge from the leak, titled “FUEL?” and has garnered over 230 comments.
“OH YES,” one fan exclaimed in response to the post. “Hell yeah,” another user chimed in. “Finally,” commented someone else, referencing the long-standing desire among fans for this mechanic to be included in the series. However, the comments also include plenty of skepticism.
“Can someone explain the appeal of having to refuel your digital car every half hour?” questioned one user. “I understand the push for realism, but this doesn’t seem like the fun kind.”
“I hope it’s optional,” another fan posted. “It’s a nice addition, but like hunger or durability systems in survival games, I usually prefer to play without it.”
“I get the appeal,” said another Redditor. “But I don’t want it to be mandatory. If it’s toggleable, that would be great. I was already immersed without this mechanic, and I feel it might disrupt my experience if I have to stop to refuel.”
On Twitter, reactions to the potential fuel mechanic in GTA 6 are similarly divided.
“If this feature doesn’t have an off switch, then it’s a bad idea,” tweeted one user. “Nah, they need to scrap that; it doesn’t belong in a GTA game,” another user added.
Conversely, some fans who primarily engage in roleplay servers that incorporate fuel mechanics are advocating for the feature, arguing that it enhances the game world and encourages strategic thinking while driving.
“I play GTARP,” one Twitter user shared. “Refueling has been part of it for years, and it makes the world feel expansive. It adds depth to your driving decisions.”
Having played GTA games since GTA 2, I’ve witnessed the gas debate unfold for years. For a long time, it seemed like Rockstar would never implement this feature. Fans often speculated about gas stations appearing in screenshots from GTA IV and GTA V, hoping that this time they could refuel between missions. But that never materialized.
However, GTA 6 appears to be taking a different approach compared to its predecessors. It seems to draw inspiration from Rockstar’s other major open-world title, Red Dead Redemption II, suggesting a greater emphasis on realism and immersion. Vehicles feel heavier, combat appears slower, and there’s a noticeable focus on how the world reacts to player actions, including a potential morality system.
Given this shift, it’s not surprising that Rockstar might finally introduce a requirement for players to stop at gas stations. Like many others, I hope this feature enhances the immersive experience rather than becoming a nuisance during exploration in Rockstar’s vast, intricately designed open worlds.
We should learn more about the potential fuel mechanic later this month when Rockstar offers an extended look at GTA 6 on August 27. If we don’t get clarity then, we won’t have to wait long to dive into GTA 6, which is set to launch on Xbox and PS5 on November 19. Regardless of Rockstar’s final decision on the fuel feature, it’s likely to stir up strong opinions among players.
