Stop Killing Games Criticizes GTA 6 Leakers: ‘Avoid Supporting Them’

Recently, the gaming community was abuzz with some seemingly credible leaks regarding Grand Theft Auto 6. While fans are primarily focused on the leaked content from Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title, the motivations of the group behind the leaks, known as “Cyberleek,” are drawing significant attention.

Despite Cyberleek’s claims of advocating for consumer rights, the digital rights organization Stop Killing Games has criticized them for “using the leak to promote a meme coin” and employing “illegal means” to make their point.

“Do not send these people your money, no matter how much sympathy you may feel for their actions,” warned SKG’s Director General, Moritz Katzner, in a post on a popular subreddit. “This is illegal, and frankly, we feel for everyone at Rockstar having to endure this situation again, especially just a week before Rockstar’s own official ‘Extended Look’ premieres.”

To provide some context, the leaked GTA 6 footage included links and QR codes directing viewers to Cyberleek’s website and a cryptocurrency. The group’s site outlines a list of “Commandments” they demand from Rockstar Games and other publishers, many of which echo the principles that Stop Killing Games advocates.

In a statement regarding the GTA 6 leak, SKG acknowledged the authenticity of the footage and noted that a group of hackers, which they chose not to name to avoid giving them undue attention, has taken responsibility. Take-Two has already responded to the situation.

One of the key demands in Cyberleek’s manifesto is for “offline fallback state[s]” for single-player games, arguing that players should retain access to content even if online servers go down. They also mentioned that the cryptocurrency promoted in the leaked footage is intended to fund a “secret project,” likely aimed at targeting other publishers who violate their listed commandments.

“Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable to us and does nothing to protect our right to keep using what we paid for,” Katzner continued in SKG’s statement. “Regardless of how strongly you disagree with the decisions made by upper management, there are still thousands of developers who poured their efforts into this project, and they are the ones suffering the most.”

While Stop Killing Games’ position is understandable, given their commitment to pursuing change through legitimate channels, many on platforms like Reddit and X have questioned their decision to address the GTA 6 leaks. In response, Katzner clarified in a separate comment that it’s crucial to call out Cyberleek’s methods to ensure that “the politicians we want to impress with our reasonableness” don’t judge the gaming community based on the hackers’ actions.
