The Marvel film that ended Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is set to debut on Disney Plus.

2024 marked a significant chapter for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with three spinoffs hitting theaters: Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter. Unfortunately, all three films faced harsh criticism, and aside from the third Venom installment, they struggled at the box office. Kraven the Hunter, led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, turned out to be a major disappointment, raking in only $62 million worldwide, effectively signaling the end of Sony’s Marvel aspirations.

Soon, Disney Plus subscribers will have the chance to see what all the buzz was (or wasn’t) about, as Kraven the Hunter is set to join the streaming service in September after its stint on Netflix. If you enjoy a chaotic cinematic experience, this one’s for you.

With Kraven the Hunter’s arrival, Disney Plus will nearly complete its lineup of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe films. Subscribers can already stream Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, and Madame Web. Venom: The Last Dance is also making its way to Disney Plus soon, while the main Spider-Man films featuring Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland are available as well.

While the Tom Hardy-led Venom films are often seen as entertainingly bad and Madame Web is just plain bad, Kraven the Hunter presents a more perplexing narrative. Taylor-Johnson portrays Kraven not as a traditional big-game hunter aiming to take down Spider-Man, but rather as a vigilante focused on combating crime. In promoting the film, he described his character as an apex predator, a “protector of the natural world,” and an “animal lover.”

The film features several Spider-Man-related characters, including the Chameleon, played by Fred Hechinger, who undergoes a remarkable transformation; Calypso, a voodoo practitioner and lawyer, portrayed by Ariana DeBose; and Russell Crowe, who delivers a Russian accent. A standout performance comes from Alessandro Nivola as Aleksei Sytsevich, the Rhino. Following Paul Giamatti’s previous portrayal in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Nivola’s version is even more bizarre, as showcased in a clip that defies explanation.

Make no mistake: Kraven the Hunter is not a “good” film. Its 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes reflects its shortcomings, with every delay, reshoot, and questionable studio decision evident on screen. Viewers may find a certain satisfaction in witnessing Kraven’s downfall over 122 minutes, especially knowing that Ryan Coogler was denied the chance to use Kraven in his Black Panther films.

Marvel enthusiasts will also find a reason to check out Kraven the Hunter. Christopher Abbott appears in a Marvel role ahead of his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming X-Men film. In this movie, he plays the relatively obscure character known as the Foreigner, an assassin with the ability to slow time through hypnosis.

Kraven the Hunter is a strange film that ultimately misses the mark, but it’s worth a watch for those on Disney Plus who are curious about Sony’s now-defunct Spider-Man Universe.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day already surpassing $2 billion at the box office and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse looking promising for its 2027 release, one can only hope Sony Pictures has learned valuable lessons about handling the Spider-Man franchise. While Kraven the Hunter is certainly not the answer, it serves as a fitting conclusion to the saga of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, making it a worthwhile watch to see how things went so wrong.

Kraven the Hunter arrives on Disney Plus on September 13.

Or, I can’t stop thinking about Kraven’s ‘voodoo’ potion powers.
