Dave Bautista Cast as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series
The rumors have been confirmed: Dave Bautista is officially stepping into the role of Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV series. Following Ryan Hurst’s injury, Bautista, the former WWE star, is set to head to Vancouver as filming resumes in a few weeks.
The journey to bring God of War to the screen has been anything but smooth. Initially, the announcement of Hurst as Kratos faced criticism due to his smaller stature. Then, in July, he suffered a serious injury while performing a stunt, necessitating a recast. This setback was significant, especially since filming had already started, but it inadvertently resolved the initial concerns. Recently, Hurst shared a photo showcasing his impressive physique, leading some to reconsider their earlier judgments. However, with his bicep injury, he can no longer take on the role, leaving fans to reflect on the fickleness of public opinion.
Now, with Bautista confirmed, the production will need to reshoot all of Kratos’s scenes from the first four episodes that were already filmed, along with the remainder of the season.
Physically, Bautista seems like a more fitting choice for the character, although some have noted he has slimmed down recently. Whether he can deliver the acting performance needed remains to be seen, but he did impress many with his portrayal of Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, despite the writing faltering in the third installment. Given that Kratos primarily expresses annoyance and growls “Boy,” it might not be too demanding.
Interestingly, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special includes a moment where a tourist refers to Drax as “the god of war,” which serves as a fun bit of foreshadowing.
Some fans have humorously likened this recasting to the infamous Sonic redesign situation, suggesting that this change will pay off in the long run.
The God of War series is being penned by Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and the recent hit For All Mankind, which is a promising sign. Given the delays, it seems unlikely that we’ll see the series on Amazon Prime before the holiday season of 2027.
